Surakarta, December 9, 2023 – Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) organized a book launch event on ecofeminism. The event was organized in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

This event opened with remarks by Dr. Guido Schnieders and Dr. Christian Strowa, Head of the Knowledge and Networks Division of the DAAD, who highlighted the DAAD’s strong support for diversity, women, and climate change initiatives.

Ms. Dewi, who is also a DAAD alumna, Ms. Ina Hunga (UKSW), and Ms. Puspa Aqirul Mala (from Soegijapranata Catholic University), who is the editor of the book, were also present at the opening of the event. They presented the ongoing struggle of mothers in Central Java and Sumba to defend their habitat/planet/river/mountain/environment.

The book launch, the highlight of the event, explored a wide range of topics, including politics and ecology in Southeast Asia, youth activism, the environmental movement, and different religious perspectives on the ongoing environmental crisis. Prof. Claudia Derichs from the Humboldt University in Berlin, local activists and scholars enriched the audience’s understanding and provided insights into the environmental challenges faced and suggested plausible solutions.

The cooperation between DAAD, UMS and Satyawacana Christian University (UKSW) is a testimony of joint efforts to advance the goals of sustainable development. The dynamic discussions and the launch of the important ecofeminist book at this event embodied a commitment to promoting a sustainable and inclusive future.

This innovative event not only offers a space to explore new things, but also encourages us to reflect and envision a world where knowledge, action, and active public involvement merge and converge for the betterment of our earth and future generations.

The launch of the Ecofeminist Book is a significant event. It provides an opportunity to initiate discussions and action plans that promote our shared objective of establishing a more sustainable and equitable world.
